Wow, been a long time. “Cocktail of the day”. Yeah. How about “cocktail of the quarter”. Sorry about that, guys.
Been busy, but found myself behind a bar last Friday night pouring drinks for some work friends. I had a list of available cocktails but this one was a bit of a crowd pleaser: I brought in my Trader Vics “Rum Keg Mug” and had a cocktail on the menu that was so big that four people had to share it! I ended up washing the Keg by hand three times over the night so I could re-serve the cocktail again and again. It’s a pretty neat sight to see four co-workers gathered around a big porcelan keg sipping away at a coconutty cocktail.
I snagged this recipe from the Grog Log, which is a must-have cocktail book. But if you’re here, you’ve probably already got one. If you don’t, though, get one.
The Coconaut
Served in a big-ass bowl and shared by three or four peeps.
8 ounces of coconus creme (Lopez is great, the Trader Vics version is excellent too)
2 ounces of fresh lime juice
7 ounces of dark jamacian rum
put all the goodies into a blender, fill it up with ice, and beat the hell out of it until it’s rummy coconutty slush. Decant into mugs, or if you’re trying to forge new friendships, pour the entire thing into a big bowl, hand out some straws, and grab the camera.
dee-licious!
Sorry for the long hiatus, folks. I’ll try to keep this thing updated. The past few months have been pretty freakin’ busy. My apologies!
Cheers,
JJ.

Johnny Johnny!!! So good to see you back! This mystery hiatus is fueling much speculation. Some of the rumours are:
-A full length feature film is in the works.
-The Tiki Avengers have been too busy averting world disaster and a hostile takeover by Hoff Enterprises S.A.
-Mr. Ambassador and A French have bought the franchise and have hired a team of highly-paid corporate lawyers to dismantle the Tiki Bar and move it to Alma Ata to minimize its cultural influence.
I hope none of these rumours are true. Except maybe the first one.
Sincerely,
The Mayor of Exotica

Ahhhh… I echo the sentiments — it’s good to have you back. And with a great classic tiki cocktail, too! I haven’t made this one in ages, but I do remember liking it a ton. Coco-nutty!

Well, I have to say… I grabbed a copy of the Grog Log after seeing this. I now truly wish I was born a few decades before. A wonderful obsession, but sad at the same time that this is such a lost art. Keep up the faithful tribute… I raise my decoratively embued tropical beverage towards your general area! (’towards’ because after having a few, I’m having a hard time pin pointing your exact location…)

Hey, great to see you back. Take your time with the recipes, and don’t burn out. Pass out; but don’t burn out.
Do you have any recipes that have Absolut Mandrin? Or do you have something better to use?
I can’t wait for the next drink!

Sweet Tiki! I finally found some Lopez Cream of Coconut. It’s sad how many places just stock an extra large bottle of creamy high fructose corn syrup with food coloring and artificial flavoring. I was in a rush, so I just tossed about 2 oz of Lopez and 2 oz of rum along with the juice of a lime into a shaker with some ice… and dumped it all into a lowball. Coconaut on the rocks… or perhaps a ‘Deep Space Coconaut’?!Â
Damn fine drink. I had two. Would have been more, but I was doing the dishes and handling sharp knives… two was enough.Â
 Thanks!

Hmmm…is there a viable substitute if one can’t get Trader Vic or Lopez? The only coconut thing I can find is Coconut milk (the gunky stuff used to make very yummy Thai curries). What’s an Aussie to do?

God no don’t use the tinned coconut milk! Check the dessert section; it’s sometimes used in baking. COCONUT CREME; its way, way different. It’s all sweet and yummy.
